What is your preference?

We each have preferences whether its tea or coffee, beer or wine, Bitter or Lager etc. We know the brain uses our senses to take in information and process. VAK are the primary senses, Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic big words meaning seeing, hearing and touching. We each have preferences in how we take in and process information.

Picture this…..

So, do you get the picture? Chances are that if you do then you have a strong Visual preference. You are not alone. A large proportion of the population have this preference- “every picture tells a story”- “a picture paints a thousand words”.

Of course by far the majority of people use all three primary senses to take in information and process it. This is why good teachers and trainers use various methods to get the point across- each method designed to appeal to a different sensory input.

If you have a strong Visual preference then you will respond well to diagrams, charts, graphs and pictures. So mindmaps with colour and pictures could be a particularly effective method for remembering or logging key learning points for someone with a strong visual preference. Now do you see what I mean?

What is your preference?

There are plenty of VAK questionnaires available to help you determine which is your own preference – some are free! Try www.businessballs.com

Now – do you get the picture?

Next week I will turn my attention to the Auditory learning style. Will that ring a bell with you?
