7 Intelligences- Logical / Mathematical

Posted by:

Hi and I hope you have had a great learning week. I received some fascinating feedback from you last week after my post on Linguistic intelligence.

As mentioned, this week I’m going to consider the Logical/Mathematical intelligence. No need for a dictionary definition for this one- it’s exactly as it says in the title! People with Logical/Mathematical intelligence are interested in patterns, categories, puzzles and their relationships. They are drawn to arithmetic problems, strategy games and experiments.

Logical-Mathematical intelligence consists of the capacity to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. In Howard Gardner’s words, it entails the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.

Many scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists function in this type of intelligence. It equates well to part of the standard IQ measure. Remember just because you may have a high level of one intelligence doesn’t necessarily equate to your job role- square pegs -round holes……

And the answer is 1089

  • Write down a 3 digit number where the first and last digits differ by 2 or more.
  • Reverse the number and subtract the smaller of the two.
  • Then reverse the resulting number and add it to the original result.
  • The final answer is always 1089!

Now matter how much beer you drink the result is always the same………

Example

624 – 426=198.  198 + 891= 1089

You will probably know if you particularly strong in this intelligence, however which other intelligences are you strong in and which do you need to develop? It’s easy to determine your own personal mix of intelligences by completing a diagnostic.

Next week I want to look at the Visual/Spatial intelligence. Is that one of your strongest intelligences?
