Hi and welcome to the penultimate email on Howard Gardner’s Seven Intelligences. This week I’m looking at Interpersonal. The clue is in the title. People with high Interpersonal intelligence have a great ability to interact with other people and to empathise. It’s much deeper than just getting on well with others.
Someone with a high level of Interpersonal Intelligence could well be perceived as “extrovert” but may not see themselves this way. They tend to have the capacity to understand other people’s intentions, drivers and motivations. Generally they are good communicators and can perceive other’s feelings and moods. There is a strong link between this intelligence and the concepts of Emotional Intelligence propounded by Daniel Goleman.
As learners, they often learn best when working in a team and thrive on debate and discussion. They sometimes need to bounce ideas off other people to give them the stretch and understanding they are looking for.
If you feel that you have this intelligence in abundance then firstly, how do you know it’s not just that you get on o.k. with others? Secondly what tactics do you need to employ to ensure you benefit most from the full use of this intelligence?
If its something you need to develop- how will you go about it?
Next week is the last in this series, Intrapersonal Intelligence, before I move onto a different subject. I hope you have a great learning week.
