7 Intelligences- Intrapersonal

Posted by:

Well here is the last in this series of emails about Howard Gardner’s 7 Intelligences. This week I want to take a look at “Intrapersonal”.

People with a high level of this particular intelligence generally have a great capacity to understand themselves in terms of their motivations and feelings. They are comfortable spending time thinking and analysing. Time for reflection is paramount for someone with a high level of intrapersonal intelligence.

Other people may see them as introverts but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are. Certainly some of their behaviours are associated with typical introvert behaviour- such as a desire for perfectionism. Someone with a high level of this intelligence may appear to be very “balanced” because they are able to use their intelligence to build a well structured overview of themselves.

In terms of learning, someone with this intelligence in abundance is likely to be very effective when working on their own but will need to factor in time to absorb, process, filter and assess information.

Does this sound like you? The best way to find out about your personal Intelligence mix is too complete a diagnostic. There are plenty of them for free on the internet- some of course want to charge you or cross sell you stuff which you may or may not want! Hey ho – I suppose that is the price you actually pay for having all this stuff on the net………

Just one final word on Gardener’s work.  He is clear that these intelligences do not work alone. On the contrary they work in conjunction with one another. A significant number of people have three key intelligences which “come naturally” to them – the others they have to work at!

Next week I want to move on to a different area completely. No hints.  You will just have to wait! I can feel the tension- it’s electric!!
